Description
This is a T-plan former parish church dating from 1832, with significant alterations and additions made in 1878 by Mathews and MacKenzie. Originally oriented east to west, the building is constructed of squared yellow and brown granite rubble from the 1832 phase, and stugged grey granite ashlar for the 1878 extension. A base course and hood moulds are visible on the east elevation.
The north elevation features a two-stage tower with a broached stone spire. A pointed arch doorway with timber boarding and decorative ironmongery is set into the ground floor of the tower. To the right is a three-bay gable of the original 1832 building, featuring Y-tracery leaded panes and a taller clerestory. An oculus is at the apex. A stair projection is located in the re-entrant angle with the east gable.
The west elevation has two four-centred arched windows flanking a small gabled former ministers’ room. The east elevation has pinnacled angle buttresses, triple stepped lancet windows, and a trefoil oculus at the apex, topped with a finial. There are diamond-patterned leaded panes and a slate roof.
The interior has been converted into seven flats. A mural depicting the Battle of Pinkie, 1547, is located in the stair hall on the west side.
Originally the parish church and later the Invercauld Festival Theatre, the building was converted to residential use in 1997. As the primary church in the Castleton of Braemar village, it held significant local importance and is one of the village's older surviving buildings. The presence of four churches in Braemar by the late 19th century reflects the community's religious dynamics. Despite changes of use and the insertion of new window openings on the north and south elevations, the exterior retains much of its historic character.
