Description

This is an early 19th century cottage, originally numbered as No 5 Castleton Terrace, forming a pair with No 7 Castleton Terrace (listed separately). It is a single-storey, three-bay building constructed from squared, coursed granite rubble. The western, principal elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central part-glazed, timber four-leaf panelled door. Twentieth century additions have altered the eastern, rear elevation.

The cottage has timber sash and case windows with plate glass and later shutters. The roof is covered in grey slates with a tile ridge, straight skews, and gable stacks topped with thackstanes.

No 6 Castleton Terrace is one of the oldest surviving cottages in Braemar. Long and low, it exhibits traditional construction methods of the area, including granite rubble construction and gable stacks. Originally thatched, the roof is now slated, retaining its original thackstanes. While extended to the rear, the front elevation remains largely unchanged, retaining its single-storey character without dormers. The architectural style is characteristic of Scottish vernacular architecture, providing an early example of the symmetrical facades that would become common in Braemar's later development associated with tourism from the mid-19th century.
