Description

This is an early 19th century cottage, originally numbered as 6 Castleton Terrace. It is a single-storey, three-bay building that forms a pair with number 6 (listed separately). The cottage is built of coursed granite rubble and is symmetrical on its west (principal) elevation, which features a central, part-glazed, four-panelled door. Later additions have been made to the east (rear) elevation.

The windows are timber sash and case windows with plate glass, and have later shutters. The roof is covered in grey slate with a tile ridge, straight skews, and gable stacks topped with thackstanes.

Number 7 Castleton Terrace is one of the oldest surviving cottages in Braemar, exhibiting traditional construction methods including granite rubble and gable stacks. It was originally thatched, later being re-roofed in slate. The cottage retains its thackstanes. Although extended to the rear, the west-facing elevation remains single-storey and retains much of its historic character, without the addition of dormers. Following the expansion of Braemar from the mid-19th century, the symmetrical facade of this building influenced later cottages. It is an example of Scottish vernacular architecture, alongside its paired building at number 6, and represents some of the earliest buildings in Braemar.
