Description

The building known as the Grocer and Post Box, located on Main Street in Kippen, likely dates from the late 18th century and was partially remodeled in the late 19th century. It is a long, five-bay block consisting of a pair of two-storey, two-bay houses that are separated by a vehicular pend with a window above. Originally, the design was nearly symmetrical, but the house on the right has been converted into a shop and Post Office, featuring an unaltered early 20th century corniced shop front. The Postmaster's house is situated to the left.

The exterior is smoothly rendered with painted ashlar margins, and it includes plate glass sash windows, a thin eaves course, and a grey slated roof that has three coped ashlar stacks, with the skews removed.

The shop front of the Post Office and Grocer has a moulded architrave frame, a frieze that may display the original shop name, and a dentilled cornice above. The central door is set in a splayed recess and is topped with a rectangular fanlight, flanked by large plate glass windows.

The pend features a flat-arched entry with stop-chamfered reveals and a window above.

Buchanan House, to the left, has a later simple corniced doorpiece with a stop-chamfered plain architrave and a projecting cornice that has been painted over. It includes a two-leaf panelled door with a fanlight, and a later narrow window has been inserted to the right at ground level. The windows in the left-hand bay have been enlarged to create stone mullioned bipartites on each floor.

Additionally, there is a George V red cast-iron pillar box positioned between the shop front and the pend, complete with a sign bracket and "POST OFFICE" sign.
