Description
Cairns Church of Scotland, located on Bloomgate in Lanark, was built in 1875 and designed by William Leiper. This church is constructed in the 12th century Gothic style, featuring snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. The north front is buttressed and has a central door set beneath a pointed roll-moulded arch, which is adorned with a hoodmould that extends across the facade at the springing level. Above the door, there are two hoodmoulded lancets with splayed reveals, and a small oculus is present in a blind stone rosette at the gable end.
The church has a low single-pitched roof over the northeast bay, while the remaining five bays are covered by the main roof, which features single lancets separated by buttresses. The five west bays display similar architectural details. A square northwest tower transitions to an octagonal shape, showcasing eight tall gabled lancets. The tower is topped with a facetted spire that includes lucarnes on alternate faces, and an iron weather-vane is positioned at the apex.
