Description
The YMCA building on Bloomgate in Lanark was designed by Mr. Kerr and completed in 1902. It is a two-storey structure featuring a three-storey tower, designed in the Scottish Baronial style. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with red sandstone quoins and dressings.
On the left side, there is a door that is recessed under a round-headed arch with deep moulded reveals. Above this door is a heavy bracketed balcony, which has ball finials, although one is missing. To the right of the door, there are two deep-set round-headed windows with a cill course, and a date stone is located in the central spandrel. A string course runs above these features.
The building has a single transomed light over the door, and to the right, there is a tripartite mullion and transom window that is topped with a stepped hoodmould under a crowstepped gable. Below the apex of this gable is a blind trefoil, along with a ball finial. The crowstepped gables are complemented by a slate roof that features decorative ridge tiles.
At the right side of the building, there is an angle tower that includes a single light on both the ground and first floors, as well as two round-headed lancets with hoodmoulds on the second floor. There are string courses separating each storey, and the tower is topped with a cornice and a conical slate roof that has an iron finial.
On the west return elevation, there is one bay that includes a door and one window, with a bipartite window on the first floor.
