Description

The YMCA building at 141-145 Main Street in Wishaw was constructed between 1912 and 1914 by John Steel, with some later alterations. It is a two-storey, long rectangular building designed specifically for the YMCA, featuring two shops on the ground floor and a pedimented entrance bay on the right. The building has an eaves cornice and a stone parapet, and it is made of brick with a channeled red sandstone facade on the main elevation.

On the northeast (Main Street) elevation, there are recessed doors and a continuous cornice and fascia above the two shops on the left. The first floor has three bays, with the central bay being canted. The right side features a pedimented bay with panelled pilasters and a shouldered, round-arched entrance that includes a semicircular fanlight, which has modern steel shutters. Above, there are French doors in a decorative surround that lead to a stone-bracketed balcony with metal railings.

Inside, the lobby contains two-leaf glazed inner doors. There are two depressed-arched openings, one of which is now blocked by a later staircase, leading to the Board Room, which showcases decorative plasterwork, coffering, and a large shallow dome adorned with decorative stained glass leaded lights. The gymnasium or auditorium on the first floor has exposed steel trusses in its roof.

The shops feature plate glass, while the first floor has non-traditional replacement glazing. A corniced red sandstone stack with circular cans is located on the gable.
