177 Main Street, Wishaw

This building, located at 181, 183, 189, and 191 Main Street in Wishaw, was designed by Alexander Cullen in 1905. It is a three-storey, L-plan corner block featuring taller bays at the corner, serving as tenements with shops on the ground floor. The structure has a finialed pavilion roof at the corner and is constructed from ashlar red sandstone, with a base course and cavetto cornices at both the ground and eaves levels.

On the northwest elevation facing Main Street, the design is asymmetrical with seven bays. It includes a consoled semicircular canopy over the canted corner entrance bay, which features a timber-panelled door with a lunette fanlight. There is a three-light window flanked by pilasters on the first and second storeys, and a coped parapet inscribed with 'CLYDE CHAMBERS'. The second bay to the left has a single window with flanking pilasters and a blind oculus above the first-storey window, along with a string course between the first and second storeys. The third bay has a small window with a projecting cill on both storeys. The fourth bay features a bipartite window with a stone mullion, flanked by pilasters and a projecting cill on the second storey. The fifth bay is advanced and canted, topped with a parapet beneath a semicircular pediment that has a blind oculus, and a wallhead chimney stack to the right. The sixth bay has a plain window on both storeys and a cast-iron balcony on the second storey. The outer right bay is canted and has a lead-swept roof.

The southeast elevation, facing Belhaven Terrace, is also asymmetrical and consists of six bays. The outer right bay is canted. The second bay from the left features a bipartite window with stone mullions on both the first and second storeys, with a coped triangular pediment and wallhead chimney to the right. The third and fourth bays have bipartite windows on both floors, with a semicircular pediment above the fourth bay. The fifth bay is advanced and canted, with a parapet beneath a triangular pediment and a wallhead chimney to the left. The outer left bay is also advanced and canted, topped with a lead-swept roof.

The northwest side elevation is a gable end with coped skews and a coped chimney stack, made of tooled red sandstone but obscured by adjacent buildings. The southwest side elevation is also made of tooled red sandstone. The rear courtyard elevation is harled with regular fenestration and features a forestair leading to a first-floor external walkway.

The building predominantly has small pane timber sash and case windows, although some are modern. The roof is covered with grey slate and has lead ridges, with coped stone skews and stacks at the ridges and gable ends. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.
