Description

Mains Castle in East Kilbride dates back to around 1450 and underwent restoration in the 1970s. It is a four-storey rectangular-plan tower house featuring a caphouse. A square stair tower is located at the southeast corner, providing access to a corbelled out parapet, from which rainwater goods extend.

On the south elevation, the stair tower has five stages and includes slit windows on the second, third, and fourth stages. To the left, there is a round-arched entrance door, a tiny slit window to the right, and a single window on the third and fourth floors. The roof of the caphouse is visible over the parapet, featuring two attic dormer windows.

The east elevation shows a blank stair tower with slit windows on the first, second, and fourth floors, and the crowstepped gable of the caphouse is visible over the parapet.

On the north elevation, there is a square window at ground level to the right, another square window on the third floor to the left, and a window on the fourth floor to the right. The roof of the caphouse is again visible over the parapet.

The west elevation features a single window on the second and fourth floors, with the crowstepped gable of the caphouse visible over the parapet.

Inside, the castle was restored in a baronial style during the 1970s. It includes an atmospheric barrel-vaulted dining hall on the ground floor, a spacious hall on the first floor with an Aga and scullery, and a small stone WC also on the first floor. The upper floors contain bedrooms, with the principal bedroom featuring a modern painted timber ceiling, along with a small kitchen, office, and a bathroom with a copper bath in the attic.
