40-42 Castle Street, Hamilton

40-42 Castle Street in Hamilton is an earlier 19th century, two-storey, L-plan building that serves as a shop and tenement block on a corner site. The exterior features painted ashlar with harling on the gable and rear, topped by a low-pitched slate roof. Architectural details include a base course, a cill course at the first floor, and a corniced blocking course. The ground floor has an aproned window, while the first floor features architraved windows with 12-pane sash and case glazing, along with coped skews.

On the Castle Street elevation, there is a central door flanked by two windows on either side, with three windows on the first floor. The Edinburgh Road elevation displays three symmetrical windows on both the ground and first floors, along with a recessed segmental bay at a splayed angle on both sides. This bay includes a window on both the ground and first floors to the right, and a door and window to the left. At the centre of the wallhead, there is a voluted, corniced, panelled, and scrolled chimney base. The interior has not been seen.
