Description
The stables at Shieldhill date from the later 19th century and are built in an L-plan configuration, featuring a single storey constructed from sandstone rubble blocks that form a courtyard with a small cottage. The main range has its openings arranged as follows, from left to right: two windows, a blocked door, two more windows, a two-leaf sliding door, a half door, a small window, and another half door. The wing that extends at right angles includes a door, a small window, a passage, a window, two half doors, a bipartite window, and another half door. The windows are designed with six-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes where they have not been removed. The roof is slated and features ornamental terracotta ridge tiles.
Originally, there were six sheet-iron ridge ventilators with ogee roofs.
Inside the stable in the main range, the walls are elaborately tiled. The lower part of the wall is lime-washed, followed by a wide band of hexagonal light green tiles, a broad band of square cream tiles, a single tile band of green, cream, and maroon tiles with a spiral pattern, and a single tile band of rectangular cream tiles. A broad band of cream tiles is pierced by segment-headed cast-iron ventilators that have grilles on the exterior and bottom-hinged flaps on the interior. The original stable divisions have been removed and replaced with concrete. The external face of the passage through the short wing features a finely moulded doorcase made from closely grained cream sandstone, which may have been re-used.
