Description

The Dollan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride is a swimming pool and leisure centre designed by Alexander Buchanan Campbell between 1963 and 1965, with internal renovations by Faulkner Brown in 1995 and further refurbishment in 2011. The building features a striking 342-foot long parabolic arch roof, which is divided into four ribs that arch at the sides, creating two large diagonal buttresses made of reinforced concrete. The walls are constructed with a mix of glazing and brick.

The entrance elevation includes a double-door, glazed entrance with a splayed glass and metal canopy situated between the central buttresses. A smaller canopy extends across the centre of the buttresses, and beneath them is a conservatory added during the 1990s renovation, with arches of the roof canopy being glazed.

The south elevation showcases a single span arch with a blind central section and a ventilator to the right, while the rest is glazed with concrete mullions. The west elevation features bricked outbuildings at the centre, a large chimney in the first bay from the left, and the remainder is glazed. The north elevation consists of broad bands of brick and slim bands of glazing up to halfway, with panelled strips in the upper part and an outbuilding, along with a flume attached to the right.

Inside, as observed in 2002, the entrance conservatory is light and spacious. The large swimming area has three glazed elevations that maximize natural light, featuring a white and blue tiled pool, a floor and spectator box, and a 55-yard swimming area that can be divided into two pools. Steps into the pool are built into the pool wall, and there is a small toddler pool and flume to the side. The facility also includes a communal 'changing village' with open access to the pool, as well as additional amenities such as a sauna, dance studios, and a gym.
