Description

The churchyard at the Old Parish Church on Montgomery Street in East Kilbride dates back to the 12th century and features a wide variety of gravestones. Among the earliest is one dated 1712, while the most recent, erected in memory of Mary Somerville, is from 1906 and commemorates her as 'the last of the weavers'. Notable gravestones include the burial stone of the parents of William and John Hunter, renowned surgeons from Long Calderwood, and a 1763 monument to Will Dykes, who tragically died at the age of two when a cart wheel crushed him. His gravestone features symbolic carvings typical of the period, including an angel, skull and cross-bones, hourglass, and open book. There is also a flat bed tomb for Reverend James French, who served as minister of the Old Parish Church from 1791 to 1835 and was a tutor to the young Walter Scott.

The kirkyard gate, built in the 20th century, has a semi-elliptical arched entrance with a large circular decorative feature and wrought-iron gates. The boundary walls date from 1794, with the northwest wall constructed of coped rubble and the southwest wall being a short rubble wall with wrought-iron railings topped with spear finials and wrought-iron gates.

The Offertory House, also known as the Session House, was built in 1794 and is a very simple square structure that is now roofless, made of square and snecked rubble.

The Stuarts of Torrance Mausoleum, dating from the 18th century and likely refaced in 1801, is a single-storey rectangular classical mausoleum. It features a rusticated base, an upper portion adorned with a regular pattern of Doric pilasters, blind panels, a delicate frieze, and a ridged blocking course. The entrance to the mausoleum is boarded, with an inscription above the door that reads: 'The burial place of the Stuarts of Torrance 1733-1801'.
