Description

Universal Connections, also known as The Key Youth Centre, is a predominantly single-storey Modernist youth centre building designed by Alexander Buchanan Campbell between 1966 and 1970. The building features a double-height gym hall at its center and has a plan composed of intersecting geometric shapes, including a rectangle, semi-circle, and triangle. It is situated within a park that slopes to the south. The exterior is constructed of brown and black brick in stretcher bond, with most of the surface painted. There is a rough-sawn timber shuttered exposed concrete parapet that drops at the window head, and the gym hall has a cantilevered and splayed parapet with a concrete clearstorey. The windows are predominantly rectangular, with narrow strip glazing set below the parapet, chamfered concrete cills, and concrete pilasters separating the windows. The clerestorey above the hall is recessed and glazed.

The entrance is located on the east elevation and features glazed doors from around the 1980s, topped by a cantilevered glazed canopy. To the left of the entrance is an advanced roughly triangular-plan block. The west elevation has deep-set entrances with stepped and splayed brick rybats. An external dog-leg stair on the east side has a semi-circular landing and is enclosed by a brick wall.

The building showcases a variety of glazing patterns, primarily fixed panes with side-hung casement and occasional top-hung hopper timber windows. The roof is flat with bituminous felt and includes pyramidal skylights.

Inside, as observed in 2011, the interior is characterized by exposed and painted brick and concrete finishes. The open-plan entrance features a café area to the right, which has undergone some early 21st-century remodelling, including the removal of low partitions. There are internal glazed openings with distinctive concrete lintels on the east wall of the café area that overlook the gym hall. To the east, there is a triangular plan courtyard surrounded on the north and southeast edges by an enclosed concrete ramp, with a curved wall to the west of the courtyard. Offices and group rooms are located to the north of the plan, while smaller group rooms, workshops, a darkroom, and a store are situated to the south. The original internal timber doors feature integral windows and distinctive projecting timber details shaped like a key motif above the windows.
