Description

These cottages on Harbour Road in Troon date from the late 19th century and consist of a single-storey, L-shaped range of dwellings and offices. The northeast side features a 12-bay section made up of 2- and 3-bay units, originally designed as six 2-bay units. The southeast side has an 18-bay arrangement grouped in a pattern of 2-3-3-3-2-3-2. The buildings are constructed from random rubble, with some areas of cherry-cocked stone on the northeast, and have red rubble sandstone dressings with painted margins. There is a raised base course and a polished eaves course beneath the corniced timber eaves. The quoins are tooled rubble, and the openings have tooled long and short surrounds with projecting cills. The doors are recessed and feature stop-chamfered painted surrounds, with some having 4-pane fanlights, although most are boarded.

On the northeast (Harbour) elevation, there are three 2-bay units offset to the right of the center, with single recessed doors at ground level and single windows in the bays to the left. To the left, there are three more 2-bay units, with a single door offset to the left of center; one door is blocked in the penultimate bay to the outer right, and the outer left bay has been reduced to a window.

The southeast (side) elevation has single recessed doors at ground level in the outer left and right bays, with single windows in the adjacent bays. The remaining 2- and 3-bay units have irregularly placed single doors offset to the left and right of center, with single windows in the remaining bays.

The windows predominantly feature 2-pane timber sash and case glazing, with some 4-pane windows on the southeast side and some replacement glazing. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate and have piended designs, with red sandstone skews on the southwest gable. The cast-iron rainwater goods are complemented by coped, stop-chamfered sandstone ridge stacks, most of which have been rebuilt in red brick and feature various circular cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1997. The rear walls consist of coped rubble walls that enclose the site.
