Description

Troon Harbour, designed by civil engineer William Jessop and land surveyor John Wilson, began construction in 1808 with plans dated 1811. The harbour includes a north pier, approximately 230 yards long and completed in 1817, and an east wall, also around 230 yards long. It features two tidal basins, with the southern basin now serving as a marina, two graving docks, and a wet dock to the north, which was completed in 1846. In the early 20th century, a new quay wall, additional cranes, and electric lighting were installed.

The north pier is a curved structure made of coursed and squared granite with a modern lighthouse on a circular red sandstone plinth at the pierhead. The west side has a coursed and squared granite ashlar wall, with a coursed red sandstone band at the center that highlights the parapet walk, which is accessed by stairs. A continuous red sandstone coping runs along the top, and plain iron bollards line the wharf.

The harbour walls feature coursed and squared granite facing on the east wall, which has a curved end, along with plain iron bollards. The remaining sections are constructed of random rubble.

The first graving dock (north) is built of coursed ashlar with stepped and battered inner elevations on the southeast, southwest, and northwest sides, 20 steps deep, and a curved southern end. There are pedestrian stairs to the southwest and keel blocks forming a central row at the base, with gates in place. The second graving dock (south) is also made of coursed ashlar, with stepped and battered inner elevations that are 6 steps deep and a curved southern end, similarly featuring pedestrian stairs to the southwest, keel blocks at the base, and gates in place.

The wet dock is enclosed by a coursed and squared granite-faced ashlar wall, creating a near rectangular-plan dock to the north, with plain iron bollards.
