Description
This is an early 19th century house with bank offices added in the mid-19th century. It is a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay classical building, accompanied by a single-storey, three-bay addition to the outer right, which formerly served as bank offices. The front of the house is painted render, while the sides and rear are random rubble sandstone with painted and polished dressings. Characteristic features include a raised base course, an architraved cill course in the central bays, an eaves course beneath corniced eaves, and a painted blocking course at the top. Giant order pilasters divide the bays, with segmental arched panels recessed at ground level. A Roman Doric columnar portico provides the main entrance.
The former bank offices feature a raised base course, dentilled corniced eaves, and a panelled parapet with segmental-headed details. Pilastered bays mark the outer left and right sides, with a segmental-arched recessed panel at the centre.
The north (entrance) elevation has steps leading to a timber front door, centred at ground level, with a geometric fanlight. The portico surrounding the door consists of engaged pilasters, paired columns, and a cast-iron balcony. A single window sits centred on the first floor, and single windows are placed in the flanking bays on both floors. The former bank offices show a single window at the centre, a pilastered surround to a timber-panelled door in the bay to the outer left, and a pilastered surround to a single opening in the bay to the outer right (the door is now missing).
The south (rear) elevation has various additions, including a window offset to the right of centre. A projecting single-storey wing with a basement is offset to the left of centre, featuring a single window aligned at first floor level. A bowed porch is located in the re-entrant angle to the left, and a single window is offset to the left of centre within a single-storey wing previously occupied by the bank offices.
The windows are predominantly four-pane timber sash and case, with some two-pane timber sash and case windows, a leaded window above the entrance, and replacement glazing at the rear. The roof is covered with grey slate and is piended. Chimneys with rendered wallheads are located to the west and east, with a corniced stack at the rear, along with various circular cans.
The interior was not inspected in 1997.
Low, coped, painted walls enclose the site to the front, while a taller, coped random rubble wall edges the side onto Bank Street. Painted, square-plan panelled piers mark the outer left and right boundaries, with chamfered angles and decorative corniced caps.
