Description
23-25 Citadel Place in Ayr is a pair of mirrored houses built in the late 19th century. These two-storey buildings feature six bays and are constructed from painted coursed sandstone, with harl on the sides. They have a base course, eaves course, corniced blocking course, and strip quoins, along with architraves around the window openings.
The north elevation, which faces the entrance, has pilastered, corniced, block-pedimented doorpieces at the second bays from the left and right. There are steps leading up to recessed timber doors with letterbox fanlights, and single windows are aligned above on the first floor. The remaining bays display regular fenestration.
The west side elevation consists of three bays, with the entrance to No 25 on the right featuring a timber door and letterbox fanlight, along with flanking single windows on both the ground and first floors, although the rightmost windows have been infilled. The east side elevation has the entrance to No 19 on the left, which includes a glazed timber door and letterbox fanlight.
Both houses have four-pane timber sash and case windows and a grey slate roof with rooflights, stone skews, gablehead and central ridge stacks, and circular and polygonal cans.
The boundary wall surrounding the site is coped, with a single gatepier at the entrance to No 19 and another at No 25. There is a small stretch of railings with Fleur-de-lis finials at No 25. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
