Description

1 Bruce Crescent in Ayr is a pair of mirrored houses built in 1860. They are single storey with an attic and have two bays. The front is made of polished ashlar, while the sides are constructed from rubble. Notable features include a base course, contrasting buckle quoins, and long and short cream surrounds around the openings. The eaves course and cornice add to the architectural detail. The upper windows extend beyond the eaves to create stepped gables, which are segmentally shaped at the center and topped with ball and thistle finials.

On the northwest elevation, there are steps leading to central entrances that have square-headed, label-moulded designs with timber doors and letterbox fanlights. A continuous label mould with decorative label stops runs above. There is a round-arched bipartite window aligned above the entrances, supported by corbelled square brackets. The flanking bays feature bipartite windows at the ground floor and single windows in the attic, all with label moulds and decorative label stops.

The northeast side elevation includes two single windows at both the ground and attic floors. The windows are made of plate glass and 4-pane timber sash and case designs. The roof is covered with grey slate and features stepped stone skews, corniced gablehead stacks, and polygonal cans.

The interiors were not seen in 1998. The property is enclosed by a coped boundary wall, which includes square-plan vehicular gatepiers that taper at the apex and a two-leaf iron gate to the left. To the right, there are square-plan pedestrian gatepiers with a single gate, and a timber gate leading to the rear of the property.
