Description

The Gaiety Theatre, located on Carrick Street in Ayr, was designed by J McHardy Young in 1902, with subsequent renovations following fires in 1903 and 1955. This three-bay theatre features a modern addition on the outer left side, characterized by cream tile work and painted harl. The building includes a base course, a cornice above the tile work, and additional cornices and a parapet on the central bay and the bay to the right.

On the southeast elevation, the central projecting bay rises to a stepped block pediment. At the ground floor, there are two pairs of glazed doors, with two single windows flanking an illuminated oriel advertisement. The cornice above the doors leads up to the stepped block pediment that extends through the roofline. To the right of the central bay, there are bipartite windows on all floors, while additional windows are present on the left at the ground and first floors. The outer left side has a large modern addition. The right side features small openings on the ground, first, and second floors, with more windows on the second and third floors, and fascias at the ground and first floors.

The theatre predominantly has timber sash and case windows, while the roof was not visible in 1998.

Inside, the Rococo interior was rebuilt by Alex Cullen, Lochhead and Brown between 1903 and 1904 after the fire, with further alterations made after the 1955 fire. The interior includes pilastered bowed boxes, broken segmental pediments, and decorative cartouches. Elaborate fascias, latticework, and cartouches flanked by figures and foliage work add to the ornate design.
