66-70 Fort Street, Ayr

This is a four-storey, nine-bay tenement built in 1895 by H.V. Eaglesham, situated on a corner plot in Ayr. The building includes commercial premises at ground floor and a square-plan, five-stage tower. It is constructed of polished red ashlar, with channelled detailing at ground floor and banding at the first floor. A base course is present, along with a deep shopfront frieze, a cornice, a second floor cill course, a consoled cornice, and a parapet that is balustraded to the outer and central bays facing Fullarton Street. Strip pilasters are located flanking the central three bays of the Fort Street elevation. Consoled iron balconies and cornices are found at the second-floor windows, while the third-floor windows have architraves.

The northwest (entrance) elevation features a glazed door leading to No. 62 on the outer left, alongside a shop window to the right. Further doors and shop windows continue along the frontage. The upper floors present a near-symmetrical arrangement, with tripartite windows at the first, second, and third floors of the outer bays, and single windows in the intermediate bays. The tower, located on the outer left, rises one stage above the roofline and contains a deeply recessed tripartite window with Ionic column mullions, topped by a balustraded parapet.

The northeast (Fullarton Street) elevation mirrors the northwest elevation with similar door and window arrangements at ground floor, and a near-symmetrical arrangement of windows on the upper floors. The tower on this side is positioned on the outer right and identical to that on the northwest elevation. Tall, banded wallhead stacks are present.

The building has shop windows at ground floor. The upper floors are fitted with plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roof was not visible in 1998. The stacks are banded and corniced, with circular cans. The interior of the building was not inspected as of 1998.
