Description

Cloncaird Estate is a mid 19th century, single storey with attic, 7-bay former stable block designed in a Gothic style. It has a U-shaped layout and is situated on ground that slopes steeply to the west. The building was converted to holiday accommodation in 2006.

The prominent central entrance features a round arched pend, topped with a heavily corbelled crenellated parapet wall that includes blank crossheads and arrowslits on the principal eastern elevation. There are squared bartizan corner towers at the outer gables, and lower range wings extend to the west to create a courtyard. A tall ashlar wall encloses the courtyard to the west, with stone steps leading down to a 5-bay lean-to store and a separate WC compartment. The building is constructed of stugged coursed ashlar with chamfered droved surrounds, while the outer wings are made of rubble stonework.

The structure has a base course and an eaves course at the parapet wall. The entrance elevation features single and bi-partite round arched lucarne windows, and the courtyard has predominantly shallow arched voussoired cartshed openings, which were infilled with modern glazing in 2006. The central pend is flanked by single window openings, and there are early 21st century flat-roofed leaded box dormers with overhanging eaves on the side wings.

The windows are predominantly double-glazed multi-pane timber sash and case, along with conservation style roof lights. The roofs are covered in slate, with angled skews on the gables and beaked skewputts on the side wings. The building also features corniced square ashlar ridge and gable-end stacks, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods.
