Description

This is an 18th-century T-plan church located on Patna Road, Kirkmichael. It was constructed in 1787 on the site of an earlier church dedicated to St Michael and remains in ecclesiastical use. The church is harled with freestone dressings and a rubble base course. It features double-height gabled entrance porches to the north and west, with timber-panelled double doors; the west porch is complemented by a Palladian window above. Small, segmental arched windows appear at ground level, with taller arched windows above. A central, single-story gabled porch fronts the south, flanked by tall, arched stained-glass windows. A bellcote sits atop the west gable, and a forestair leads to the east. The windows are predominantly timber, with 6, 13, and 17 panes, presented as fixed or sash and case. The roof is covered in grey slate, with coped ashlar skewes displaying decorative urns on the skewputts and gable apex.

The interior retains its original layout and much of the original church furniture. A spiral staircase on the north side leads to the laird's loft, belonging to the Cassilis family. Simple cornicing is present, along with pews to the ground, including box pews. Three panelled lofts are situated to the west, north, and east, supported by Doric columns. The laird's loft boasts a vaulted plaster ceiling and fluted Doric pilasters. A stone ashlar polygonal pulpit, designed by James A Morris and Hugh Wallace, is centrally positioned on the south side.

The church stands within its own churchyard, accessed through a late 17th-century lych gate which is listed separately.
