Description
This is a circa 1817 tenement building located on Commercial Street in Lerwick, extending to 6 bays (Nos 2-6) with a further two bays at No. 8. It incorporates Copland’s Pier and Stout’s Piers, creating a U-shaped arrangement around a flagged courtyard. The building is constructed of random rubble with stugged and droved sandstone dressings.
The main elevation facing Commercial Street is two storeys and an attic, with a concealed basement. It is divided into two groups of three bays, each with a ground floor entrance. A regular pattern of windows is visible on the first floor. The rear elevation is more irregular, featuring projecting gabled lodberries on the north side, and slate-hung timber box dormers breaking the eavesline. The east and west gable ends are relatively plain, with windows at various levels.
Copland's Pier and Lodge, to the east, comprises a slipway with a parapet and cobbled surface. It has a three-bay eastern elevation with a pend, a timber shutter to a window above, and an upper floor door with a cantilevered balcony and flagpole. The north gable has a balcony, while the west (courtyard) side has a sliding door, a metal staircase, and a dormer with a window. Stout’s Pier and Lodge, to the west, features a sloping pier with cobbled paving and steps. Its western elevation has an infilled window, an infilled door, and a modern enclosure containing a ramp. The north gable has two small windows in the gablehead. The courtyard side of Stout’s Lodge has a metal staircase, a door in a dormer, and a fixed-light window.
The building has a purple-grey slate roof with cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Circular cans are present at ridge and gable stacks. The gables are finished with cement-rendered skew copes and corbelled skewputts, with lead coverings at the party walls. Most windows are modern four-pane timber sash and case, with plate glass at the first floor of No. 2. A random rubble sea wall with irregular openings runs along the north side of the courtyard.
