4-6 Law Lane, Lerwick

8 Law Lane in Lerwick is an early 19th century, three-storey, three-bay symmetrical house with a rectangular plan, situated on a sloping site. It features two single-storey and attic two-bay gabled wings that step down the hill to the northeast. The walls are constructed of random rubble with ashlar dressings and have projecting cills at the windows.

On the southeast elevation facing Law Lane, there is a six-panel timber door with a plate glass fanlight centered at the ground floor, flanked by windows, with regular fenestration on the first and second floors. The southwest elevation has a two-bay gable end with regular fenestration on the first floor, and a single window in the left bay.

The northwest (rear) elevation is irregularly fenestrated, while the northeast elevation features windows on each floor to the left, with the wing advanced at the ground floor to the right.

The wing, formerly known as No 6 Law Lane, has a two-bay elevation facing Law Lane (southwest), with an infilled door in the left bay and a single window in the gablehead, while the ground floor is obscured by No 4. No 4 Law Lane has a two-bay elevation to Law Lane (southwest) that is blank at the ground floor in the right bay, with a metal-clad box dormer breaking the eaves above and a vertically-boarded timber door to the left of center at the northeast gable. The rear elevation is blank.

The building features modern 12-pane glazing, a purple-grey slate roof, stugged ashlar apex stacks, and coped stacks with circular battered and moulded red cans. Ashlar and concrete skew copes are also present.
