Description
The former Congregational Chapel, designed by Frank Worthington Simon in 1889, is a 5-bay, rectangular-plan building in the Arts and Crafts style. It features buttresses, a large circular window on the gable, a curved stair tower on the south side, and a pitched and piended vestry at the rear. The exterior is constructed from squared and snecked whinstone rubble, accented with smooth red sandstone quoins and window margins. The principal elevation has a tall base plinth, paired pointed arched windows set between the buttresses, and a pointed arch doorpiece with a quatrefoil moulding in the tympanum.
The chapel includes square-pane leaded windows and 4-pane timber sash and case windows at the rear. The roofs are covered with graded grey slate and have timber-bracketed overhanging eaves. The stone skews feature gablet skewputts and a fleur de lys finial at the apex, along with terracotta ridge tiles and a finial on the stair tower. A rectangular stack is located at the rear, and cast-iron rainwater goods are present.
Inside, the building has been converted to retail premises. It retains curved timber roof trusses and a pointed sandstone chancel arch above a 20th-century false ceiling, with timber panelling up to dado height.
