Description
The Pines, formerly known as Bellenden, is a large Arts and Crafts villa built by James B Dunn in 1903 and 1919. This two-storey and attic building features a roughly L-shaped, asymmetrical design with five bays and a prominent bowed entrance stair tower at the re-entrant angle. It is situated on steep ground that overlooks the town. The exterior is rendered with smooth sandstone margins around the boxed windows and a corniced door surround. The gables have 4-light windows, and there are small asymmetrically placed windows by the stair and to the right section. A later mansard roof addition has been added to the rear.
The principal elevations showcase square-pane leaded windows, 6-over-2-pane timber sash and case windows, and small 4-pane casements elsewhere, along with rooflights. The oak entrance door features cast-iron rivets and a wrought-iron pull doorbell. The roof is covered with small green slates and has sweeping overhanging eaves, tall tapered eaves, and ridge stacks with plain clay cans. The property also has cast-iron rainwater goods, some with lead hoppers and square-section downpipes.
Inside, there is a panelled reception hall that includes an integral chimneypiece adorned with delft tiles and a copper hood, along with linked bench seating on the sides. A plaster apple blossom frieze decorates the hall. The wide turned timber stair features arched details, a fretwork balustrade, and a carved lion newel post. The timber-panelled drawing room boasts a heavy ornate cornice and a large oval ceiling rose, along with fitted glazed timber display cabinets. Three rooms have parquet floors. A long corridor leads to the upper floor bedrooms, some of which have delft-tiled chimneypieces. The cloakroom is finished with white glazed brick tiles and an original 'Deluge' W.C. A plain timber stair provides access to the attic rooms.
The boundary walls and ancillary structures include buttressed whinstone retaining walls that form a garden terrace with curved ends, topped with sandstone copes and a partially opened balustrade. Central steps with ball finials lead to the entrance. The tall snecked whinstone boundary walls are capped with sandstone and feature round capped gatepiers. There is a brick-based timber greenhouse on raised ground at the rear, linked to the wall with additional garden structures behind.
