Description

Glenroy, formerly known as St Ronan's Lodge, is a single-storey, four-bay cottage built in the Regency style by John Smith in 1824, with later alterations. The building has an L-shaped plan and a piended roof, featuring a later single-bay extension to the north that includes a tri-partite hoodmoulded window. The principal elevation showcases floor-to-ceiling windows, along with a later plain glazed canted bay with timber mullions to the right. The exterior is finished with rendered stonework, margined stone quoins, and window surrounds. A small entrance bay is located at the southwest, complete with an octagonal ridge stack that forms the L-plan, and there is a small early 20th-century timber-clad entrance porch to the north. The cottage has a deep stone base course, an eaves band course, and deep timber bracketed overhanging eaves.

The windows predominantly feature multi-pane glazing in timber sash and case designs, with fixed casements; the rear has 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows. The dual piended roofs are covered with graded grey slates, and the ashlar wallhead stacks have a chamfered lozenge plan with circular clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

Inside, the cottage retains a good later 19th-century decorative scheme, including plain cornicing and timber chimneypieces. A fine large fitted Adam style mirror is located in the sitting room. The original interior layout remains intact, with the principal rooms leading off a linear corridor to the rear, and kitchen accommodation in the L-plan at the back.
