Gates And Boundary Walls, Gate Piers, Hay Lodge, Old Town, Peebles

The gates and boundary walls at the west end of Old Town in Peebles were designed by the Burgh Surveyors Office around 1930. The gatepiers are made of rusticated cream sandstone ashlar and feature a square shape, fluted frieze, cornice, and large ball finials. The gates are made of wrought iron.

The boundary walls consist of coursed bull-faced sandstone, forming low walls with saddleback ashlar coping that flank the gates. There is also a rubble boundary wall along the road, topped with boulder coping.

Additionally, there is an ice house constructed from rubble whinstone, built into the south-facing slope on the northern bank of the River Tweed. It has a droved ashlar dwarf doorcase, with one jamb featuring an arris roll-moulding, leading into a small vaulted room.
