Description
3 Tower Knowe in Hawick is a three-storey, three-bay tenement and shop building designed by James Pearson Alison in 1898. The principal elevation features sandstone ashlar, while the rest of the building is constructed from random rubble with stugged ashlar dressings. It has a deep curved base course, a cornice above the shop fascias, and a moulded eaves course. The windows are regularly spaced and have chamfered margins, with stone-mullioned bipartite windows in the centre bay. The central entrance has a timber-panelled door with a fanlight, flanked by recessed shop doors also with fanlights. The outer edges of the shopfronts are adorned with rusticated pilasters and curvilinear panel heads.
The building features timber sash-and-case windows, with plate glass in the lower sashes and multi-pane glazing in the upper sashes. The skews are moulded and coped with ashlar, and there is a corniced ashlar gablehead stack with tall buff clay cans. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a stone ridge, with cast-iron rainwater goods.
Inside, the shop on the right has a herringbone-pattern timber parquet floor, timber panelling, cast-iron brackets for shelves, cornicing, and a timber-panelled inner door. The shop on the left has no remaining original features.
