2 Canongate, Jedburgh

2 Canongate in Jedburgh is a three-storey building with an attic, constructed in 1897 by James Pearson Alison, incorporating earlier materials. The building features a three-bay shop with a flat above, made of coursed cream stugged ashlar sandstone with polished dressings. The ground floor is framed by channelled pilasters that support a cornice and a central pediment, with a base course below.

On the outer left, there is a panelled door leading to the flat (Jedvale), which has a rectangular fanlight and a moulded timber architrave. To the right, the shop has a central panelled door and fanlight, set deep in a doorcase with a moulded ashlar architrave applied to the channelled pilasters. This is flanked by plate glass windows under a moulded lintel, and there is an awning box below the cornice.

The upper floors have architraved windows with cills in each bay, and the first floor features cornices above the windows. The eaves cornice adds to the detailing. There are also a pair of flat-roofed canted timber dormers that are slate-hung. The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows, a broad rendered stack, grey slates, and a cast-iron downpipe.
