Description
Tower Mill in Kirkstile, Hawick, dates from around 1852 and is a three-storey former mill that has been converted for cultural and commercial use. The building features a long, splayed rectangular plan that follows the bend in the road and is carried across the Slitrig Water on a single segmental arch. It is constructed of random whinstone rubble with dressed yellow sandstone ashlar detailing, including an eaves course and long and short quoins. The mill has tabbed window margins with projecting cills, with 10 bays facing west towards Kirkstile, 6 bays to the east towards Tower Knowe, and 4 bays to the south towards Silver Street. The roof is M-profiled and piended, covered with grey slate and featuring metal ridges.
Inside, the mill has plain cast-iron columns that support timber ceiling beams. The basement contains the water wheel and boiler frontage.
