Description

Hartwith Mill is a former mill that has been converted into a house, along with a kiln and outbuildings. It dates from the early to mid 19th century and is constructed of coursed squared gritstone, topped with grey slate and stone slate roofs.

The south facade features a three-storey, two-bay mill house, with a taller three-storey, three-bay mill building to the left. To the right is a later 19th-century house, while the mill building projects forward on the left. The mill house has a blocked round-arched cart entrance in the center, which now contains a four-pane sash window. Similar sash windows are found throughout, although the second-floor left window has a late 20th-century frame. The facade also includes a shaped kneeler, gable coping, and an end stack on the right.

An attached covered water-wheel is positioned at right angles to the left and features a six-pane window. The taller mill building's south facade is mostly hidden by later additions, but it retains original sash windows on the first floor to the right and on the second floor in the center and to the right. This building also has shaped kneelers, gable coping, and end stacks. The left return of the building includes an external stair leading to an entrance on the first floor.

Inside, the mill retains its original flooring and much of its mid-19th-century milling machinery, including drive shafts and gearing. The water-wheel is intact and is likely a breast shot type.
