Description
New Bridge is a bridge over the River Nidd, built in 1822, possibly using materials from an earlier structure. It is constructed of coursed squared gritstone, featuring a sandy texture on the north-west side and harder grey stone on the south-east. The bridge is paved with river cobbles and has a single high round arch that supports a 2-metre wide causeway, spanning approximately 20 metres.
The bridge includes voussoirs and a projecting band, with rounded coping on the parapet. The parapet ends in square bollards topped with pyramidal caps. At each end, the path narrows with a pair of rounded stone bollards, approximately 60 centimetres high, that have grooved surfaces. There are also two iron loops embedded in the outer surface of the parapet on the upstream side. A stone stile is incorporated into the parapet wall at the south-west end.
This bridge is located on the historic pack-horse track that runs from Otley to Ripon. An earlier single-span bridge, situated about 25 yards upstream, was demolished in 1822, and it is likely that the current bridge has reused stone from that structure and is of a similar style. The bridge is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
