Description
The former Volunteer Hall, built in 1867, is a single-storey, three-bay rectangular building located close to the road in Selkirk. Its symmetrical, classically detailed front is constructed of squared, pale grey whinstone, featuring rusticated pilaster quoins and polished ashlar dressings, while the side and rear elevations are made of whinstone rubble. The central bay has a glazed double door framed by a classical doorpiece with a consoled pediment, and the windows on either side are adorned with corniced architraves. Above the moulded cornice, there is a rectangular plaque flanked by scrolled consoles, inscribed with 'Volunteer Hall' and dated 1867. Each front corner has a coped chimney stack with a clay can. The roof has a platform apex covered with grey slates, and the windows and doors on the main elevation feature fixed, multi-pane glazing. There is a later metal and glazed entrance outshot added around 2000, as well as an earlier lean-to addition on the south elevation.
The interior was observed in 2016 and has been remodeled for use as a community centre, including a reception area, café, and partitioned office space that extends into the hall area. The hall features a king post trussed ceiling, with timber arch braces supported on stone corbels, and each tie beam is decorated with two timber bosses.
