Description
Back Row in Selkirk is a building from the later 19th century that has undergone some additions and alterations. It is a two-storey structure with five bays, constructed from bull-faced squared and snecked sandstone, featuring red sandstone ashlar dressings. The building has a base course and an eaves course.
On the west elevation facing Back Row, there are windows at the ground level in the central bay and the penultimate bay to the right, with eaves breaking at the first floor in gabled dormerheads. A deep-set, two-leaf panelled door is located in the penultimate bay to the left, topped by a cornice and a square, uncarved plaque. Above this door, there is a small window at the first floor with a segmental pediment. The outer left bay contains two round gunloops set in trefoil margins at ground level. A corbelled tower rises from the first floor, canted below the eaves level, with a small window to the left at the first floor and another at eaves height in the centre. The outer right bay features a shoulder-arched pend-opening at ground level with a two-leaf boarded gate, and above it, there is a bipartite window at the first floor that breaks the eaves, topped by a crowstepped gable in the dormerhead.
The east elevation was not seen in 1995. The building has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although modern glazing has been installed at the ground level. The roof is slate, with a half-piended roof on the outer right side of the west elevation. There is a crowstepped gable to the north, featuring a whinstone and ashlar coped wallhead stack.
The interior was not seen in 1995.
