Description
The Council Buildings in Selkirk are a late 18th century classical structure with later additions and alterations. This two-storey, five-bay building was originally a house and features a single-storey addition on the left. The main structure is constructed of stugged ashlar with droved ashlar dressings, while the southwest and southeast elevations are made of whinstone rubble with droved ashlar dressings. The single-storey addition is rendered and has timber cladding on the outer left.
The northwest elevation, facing High Street, has a central panelled door with a border-glazed, multi-pane rectangular fanlight above, set deep within a pilastered and corniced doorpiece. Above this, there is a tripartite window on the first floor. Each flanking bay has a window on both floors. The single-storey addition to the left has an opening in the centre, which was formerly larger, and a window in each bay to the right of centre. There is a depressed-arched carriage opening in the inner left bay and a gabled bay on the outer left that features a shop window and entrance.
On the southeast elevation, there is a low two-storey addition at the ground with a pitched roof and a window on the first floor of the main building. To the left, there is a later advanced full-height three-light window with a modern door at ground level. Each floor of the bays to the right has a window. Additionally, there is a modern harled platformed addition at the return angle on the outer left of the addition.
The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, except for the single-storey addition, which has plate glass timber sash and case windows. The roofs are slate, with a piend and platformed roof on the main building and a slate roof on the addition, which includes a large louvred ventilator between the central bay and the inner left.
The interior, not fully seen since 1995, includes a vestibule door with a glazed upper panel featuring stained glass depicting a Selkirk motif, as well as a plaster ceiling rose in the hall.
