Description
48 Roxburgh Street is a late 18th century classical villa featuring wings on either side of a forecourt. The building is two storeys high on a raised basement and has a three-bay east front that is rendered. The entrance is located in the advanced and pedimented centre bay, which is accessed by steps over a railed area; the balustrades have been replaced with brick. The doorway includes a fanlight and sidelights, flanked by Tuscan pilasters and an entablature with metopes and a mutulated cornice. The windows are adorned with moulded architraves, with cornicing at the ground floor.
The south front has a three-bay layout, with the centre bay advanced and pedimented, and is harled with ashlar margins. The west front is asymmetrical, featuring a broad three-window segmental bow on the right and a canted bay on the left. The roof is piended and slightly bell-cast, with a grouped central stack that has been rebuilt in brick.
The left-hand wing is two storeys tall with a narrow two-bay front and a loft on the upper floor, constructed of stugged ashlar with a brick flank and a piended slated roof. The right-hand wing is a single-storey structure with a rendered front and a polished ashlar pilastered coach-house entry facing Roxburgh Street. It has brick flanks and a piended and platformed slated roof. The forecourt wall is rendered, with railings and gatepiers that have been replaced in brick.
