Description
This is an early to earlier and earlier to mid-19th century barn and cartshed situated at Wyndhead Farm, East High Street, Lauder. The barn is a 2-storey, 7-bay rectangular building, and the cartshed is a single-storey, 5-bay rectangular structure set at right angles to the southwest, attached to a non-listed adjoining building. Both are constructed of whinstone rubble with rubble dressings.
The barn’s northeast elevation displays a blocked entrance in the central bay, flanked by blocked windows. Two bays to the right have entrances with boarded timber doors, and a blocked entrance and further blocked windows are present to the left. A central loading door with a boarded timber door is located on the first floor, with windows in the three flanking bays; two on the left are blocked, and two on the right have boarded shutters. Three rectangular ventilation openings have been inserted above ground floor lintel level. The southwest elevation is largely obscured by later additions which are not listed; visible sections reveal inserted entrances with boarded timber doors and fanlights, a further entrance with a boarded timber door, a window to the right, and three window openings to the first floor. An enlarged or inserted entrance with a sliding door is on the southeast elevation, alongside a first-floor loading door with a boarded timber door in the gable. The northwest elevation adjoins outbuildings belonging to the former farmhouse at 38 East High Street.
The cartshed’s southeast elevation features two large, almost full-height, segmental-headed cart openings to the right, with three lower openings to the left, each with a window above leading to a loft. Most of the cart openings previously had boarded timber doors. The southwest elevation has a loading door at the gable end, where the door is now missing. A large early 20th-century addition which is not listed adjoins the right side. Windows are either blocked or have boarded timber shutters. The barn has a grey slate roof, while the cartshed has a corrugated metal roof.
