Description
Se Range at Cairncross Farmhouse dates from the late 18th century and has undergone later additions and alterations. It is a symmetrical, three-storey, three-bay farmhouse featuring a gabled porch at the front, a full-width lean-to addition at the rear, and a long, single-storey rectangular-plan range attached to the southeast. The building is predominantly harled, with squared and snecked tooled render on the northwest side and red sandstone margins.
On the southwest (entrance) elevation, the principal block has a projecting, pedimented porch centered at the ground level, which contains a part-glazed timber panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. There is a single window aligned on the first floor and a squat window on the second floor. The ground and first floors have single windows in the bays flanking the center, with gabled dormerheads above the single windows breaking the eaves. The single-storey range on the right has a single window offset to the left in the block to the left and another single window offset to the left in the block to the right.
The northwest (side) elevation features a gable end with single windows at all floors offset to the right, and there are single windows in a steeply-pitched lean-to addition to the left. The southeast (side) elevation of the principal block has a single window on the first floor offset to the left of center, with another single window in the lean-to addition to the right. There is a single-storey, gabled range projecting at ground level with various additions at the rear.
The building has modern windows throughout, grey slate roofs, and stone-coped skews. The principal block has brick-built apex stacks with three linked, corniced flues, while the single-storey range has a tall, stepped, brick-built ridge stack with missing cans.
The boundary walls, gatepiers, gate, and railings include a low, coped and harled wall in front of the principal block, flanked by arched gatepiers at the pedestrian entrance, a spearheaded iron gate, and spearheaded railings to the side, which are partially missing. There is a low, rubble-coped wall in front of the single-storey range and tall, rubble-coped walls enclosing the garden at the rear.
