Description

King's Hotel, located at 56 Market Street, dates from around 1905 and is a three-storey hotel with an upper breaking eaves and an irregular seven-bay plan. The exterior is constructed of whin rubble with red sandstone ashlar dressings, featuring a rock-faced finish on the upper floors and harled walls at the rear. There is a string course on the first floor and a signage band course on the second floor, with stop-chamfered window surrounds.

The front (east) elevation has a regular arrangement of windows, including bipartite and single windows, and features timber barge-boarded dormer-heads. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass. The roof is covered in purple slate, with clay ridges and ashlar skews, and there are wallhead stacks and cast iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the hotel has been largely modernised but still retains some original features, such as plasterwork and a formal timber stair.
