Description

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church and Presbytery, located in Old Bongate, Jedburgh, was designed by Reginald Fairlie in 1937. It is a simple, gabled, aisleless church featuring Gothic details and an octagonal canted apse, with an attached accommodation court. The exterior is rendered white with painted cills.

The southeast elevation showcases the gabled end of the nave, adorned with ashlar dressings, capped clasping buttresses, skewblocks, and a cross at the gablehead. It features a pointed arch window with four round-headed lights and late Scottish tracery, topped by a statue of Christ supported on a corbel and sheltered by a small canopy. The northeast elevation, facing Upper Bongate Gardens, consists of six bays with undressed round-headed windows, while the inner right bay contains three closely spaced windows. The southwest elevation has five bays, with a gabled porch featuring a round-headed opening in the right bay and three bays to the left with similar windows. The left bay includes a single-storey wing of the Priest's house, attached at a right angle. The northeast elevation is a blank canted apsidal end with single rectangular windows on the returns of the apse and a piended roof.

The presbytery is a single-storey house aligned northeast/southwest, connected to the church at the west corner, finished in the same style as the church. The southeast elevation has seven bays with windows in all bays, an advanced and gabled centre bay featuring a tripartite window, and a small window in the far right bay linking to the church. The inner left bay has a panelled door within a moulded ashlar doorcase. The southwest elevation includes a canted window with a piended roof at the right gable and a bipartite window on the left with a parapet above a flat roof.

To the rear of the presbytery, there is ancillary accommodation in a U-plan court that is open to the southwest, featuring irregular fenestration and a shrine in the southwest wall. A modern garage is located to the northwest of the church. The windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes, and the traceried window has diamond lead-pane glazing. The roofs are slightly bell-cast, covered with grey slates, and feature coped rendered stacks and cast-iron downpipes.

The interior of the church is very plain and has undergone significant alterations. The gatepiers and boundary walls consist of square ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps, and a harl-pointed rubble wall with semi-circular coping.
