Description

St Agatha's Roman Catholic Church, built in 1924 to a Romanesque style design by Reginald Fairlie, stands on Methil Brae in Buckhaven. The church’s altar dates from 1938. The building is of rectangular plan, comprising an aisless nave with side chapels and a southeastern link to the presbytery. It is constructed of red brick and concrete blockwork, with a chamfered string course and cill course, as well as a mutuled eaves course. Round and segmental-headed openings are emphasised by voussoirs.

The northeastern elevation features a gable with a cross finial and a full-width tiled loggia supported by square-plan columns and a square-headed arcade. A tall, bipartite window occupies the centre, flanked by bays containing boarded timber doors. Three small round-headed windows are positioned at a second stage. The southeastern (entrance) elevation includes a porch with a moulded round-headed doorcase, a deep-set boarded timber door with decorative wrought-iron hinges, a decoratively-astragalled semicircular fanlight, and a small window to the right return. Four central bays have a stone cross and a memorial at ground level, with a segmental-headed tripartite window above each. A lower, projecting, piended bay is situated to the outer left, having four small round-headed windows (grouped 3-1) and a segmental-headed tripartite window to the right return. The presbytery link incorporates a door and small window to its projecting face, with three small round-headed windows to the left return. A chapel on the penultimate bay to the left features a segmental-headed window under a sloping roof, and a narrow round-headed tripartite window to the outer left. The northwestern elevation displays three segmental-headed windows beneath a projecting sloping roof to the right of centre, a narrow round-headed tripartite to the outer right, and four segmental-headed windows to the left, beyond which a pitched-roofed chapel is positioned. The southwestern elevation is a blank gabled elevation with a stone-cross finial.

The glazing includes small panes of clear glass, with stained glass as detailed below. Red tiles cover the roof. Ashlar-coped skews are present.

The interior of the church features a nave with dividing buttresses and fixed timber pews, along with arcading to flanking transeptal chapels. There is an altar rail with turned balusters and a timber-panelled chancel containing a raised marble altar and piscina. The northwest transept has a gothic-style carved altar and baldacchino with painted panels flanking a statue of Christ. The southeast transept, a Lady Chapel, features a similarly detailed altar and a statue of Our Lady. The stained glass in the Lady Chapel depicts the Holy Family and Nativity scenes, signed by John Blyth. The northwest transept has a triptych-style arrangement, showing Mary with Jesus flanked by angels, and saints, although it underwent repairs in 1998. The nave's stained glass presents a chronological sequence of saints, including Ninian, Patrick, Columba, Mungo, Cuthbert, Magnus, David, and John Ogilvie, along with Saints Andrew, Agatha, and Margaret in the porch. A depiction of St Peter appearing to St Agatha is also present. A red brick boundary wall surrounds the property.
