Trafalgar House, Guards Road, Coldstream

Trafalgar House, located on Guards Road in Coldstream, was designed by architect Thomas Hamilton and built between 1830 and 1832. This large, two-storey classical building features a prominent square south front made of ashlar stone with polished margins. The south front has three bays, with a double-leaf panelled door at the centre flanked by sidelights and supported by a Tuscan cornice. Tall sash windows extend from the floor on both storeys, with a cill base course at the ground floor and a cill/band course at the first floor, both of which continue around the building. The windows are architraved, and three of the ground floor windows have cornices, while the central first floor window is wider. All windows have lying-pane glazing.

The east front has four bays, with ground floor windows matching the size of those on the south front but without architraves. The first floor windows are smaller, featuring apron panels below and 12-pane glazing, except for the left window, which is blind. The west front has suffered modern alterations, with the ground floor destroyed by a new extension. The first floor features two tall sash windows with lying-pane glazing, flanking a round-headed staircase window. The rear elevation has three bays, with a modern extension at the ground floor and the outer first floor windows being blind. A continuous eaves band runs around the building, which has very wide eaves. The low slate piended roof rises to a central cluster of brick stacks, which have been lowered.
