Description
Barclays Bank, located at 21-23 Woodmarket in Kelso, was built around the 1850s and features an Italianate style. This two-storey building has three main bays, with a slightly recessed fourth bay on the right. The front is made of polished ashlar stone, and the central door, along with the ground floor windows, are round-headed. These windows have key blocks that are intricately carved with the heads of goddesses, and the spandrels include roundels depicting putti engaged in gardening activities. The first-floor windows are also round-headed and feature panelled aprons and key blocks adorned with carvings of buds, flowers, and fruits. The building has rusticated pilaster strips at the corners, a cornice, and a piended and platformed slated roof.
At the rear of the bank, there is a large two-storey seed warehouse facing Abbey Row. This warehouse has three bays and is three storeys tall, with modern openings added at the upper left and lower right. It is constructed of rubble with droved dressings and has a piended and platformed slated roof.
