Description

Garden Cottage, located on the Thirlestane Castle Estate, was likely designed by William Burn around 1841. This is a single, two-storey and attic, four-bay gardener's cottage with a roughly L-shaped plan and multiple gables and pitched roofs. It features broad, bracketed overhanging eaves and is situated near the northwest corner of the Thirlestane Castle Walled Garden. The building is constructed from squared and snecked greywacke rubble, accented with red sandstone ashlar dressings, and includes a base course, chamfered margins, and polished greywacke quoins.

On the north (principal) elevation, there is a pitched roof porch at the northeast re-entrant angle, which has basket-arched entrances on the north and east sides. Above the central arch, the carved Maitland Family Arms, featuring a lion crest, can be seen. A timber door is located on the west side of the porch. To the left of the porch, there is a bi-partite timber window, and to the right, a tri-partite timber window. An advanced gable on the far right has a canted window at ground level and a tri-partite window above it. The east elevation features another canted window at ground level and an advanced bay window on the west elevation. The south elevation includes an advanced single-storey gabled outshot with a door facing south and a pair of windows with diamond glazing on the right side. A wall with a pedestrian gate and rounded red sandstone coping extends to the south.

The cottage showcases a variety of glazing patterns, predominantly featuring timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate, and it has tall ridge and co-axial stacks with raking shoulders, coping, and clay cans.
