Description
Chuckie Lodge, formerly known as Harryburn Lodge, is a single-storey gate lodge built in 1854, possibly by John Smith of Darnick. The lodge has a rectangular plan and a piend roof, featuring an ornamental timber porch, a canted bay on the right side, and deep overhanging eaves. The exterior is made of coursed pebbles set in cement, framed with slim polished pink sandstone dressings, while the rear extension is constructed of squared pink sandstone. Notable architectural details include a base course, cill course, quoin strips, and droved window margins.
The central porch on the southwest elevation is supported by timber columns and features an open lattice frieze and pediment. There is a bipartite stone-mullioned window on the southeast elevation, and a late 20th-century flat-roofed extension at the rear (northeast).
The windows predominantly have 4-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, with the canted bay featuring 6-pane timber horizontal glazing. The rear extension includes non-traditional uPVC windows and a door. The roof is covered with grey slate and has metal ridges, along with a coped, rendered ridge stack topped with an octagonal buff clay can.
Inside, the original layout remains intact in the original part of the lodge, consisting of a small entrance hall and a single room on each side, with additional rooms added in the rear extension. Throughout the lodge, there are 4-panel timber doors.
