Description

The Stables, located at 38 Ferguslie in Paisley, is a baronial-style building constructed in 1870. It is a single-storey and attic rectangular block made of squared rubble with ashlar dressings. The building features asymmetrical elevations, each with advanced outer bays topped by crowstepped gables. The north and south sides have central gables, while the east side has an advanced centre gable with a segmental pend and skews, complete with kneelers. The roof includes some apex stacks, as well as facetted and paired stacks.

The structure displays a variety of doors and windows, many of which are transomed and mullioned. Some windows are raised through the eaves and gabletted. Notably, there is a canted window with a battlemented parapet on the left gable of the east elevation. The upper windows of the gables are either round-headed or adorned with round pediments.

Two circular, two-storey towers with conical slate roofs are present, one located at the southeast corner featuring a gabletted window raised through the eaves, and the other situated in the re-entrant angle of the west elevation. Both towers have doors; the one to the southeast is architraved and segmentally headed with a raised string course, while the door to the west is flat-headed but set within a semi-circular tympanum with a raised string course above.

The rest of the building has slate roofs with ashlar stacks and ridge roof ventilators, including a square ventilator on the south elevation that has louvres and an ogival lead cap with a wind vane. There is also a bargeboarded dormer on the south side. The east and west sides feature timber-framed gables at the ends of the roof, which is covered with slates and skylights. Horsehead finials adorn the gables.

The property is complemented by four ashlar gatepiers that exhibit diamond-facetted rustication.
