Description

The Stable Block and Stores at Ferguslie Thread Works in Paisley was built around 1850 for J and P Coats. This single-storey building features an 8-bay store with a lower single-storey stables block to the west. The blind south elevations curve to follow the line of the canal, and there are skylights in the south slope of the roof. The structure is made from roughly squared stugged rubble on the north and south sides, with droved and stugged dressings and decorative margins around the openings, alternating between broad and narrow. The east gable end has stugged rubble in courses, and the building is topped with coped Jacobethan gables that have ledged skewputts. The roof is slated, although the two easternmost bays of the store lost their roof in 1991.

On the east gable of the store, two metal doors have been added at ground level. There is an ashlar panel with a moulded roundel opening, which originally had a clock above it in the gable. The apex features a spiky gabletted bellocte with coped skews and ledged skewputts, similar to the main gables, although the bell is no longer present.

The north elevation of the store has 8 bays with regular openings arranged in a pattern of 2-1-2-1-2. The outer bays and the center have paired windows, with two doors located between them. The doors feature raised margins and are distinctively treated with a vertically boarded door and a rectangular fanlight set in a simple broad raised architrave, further enhanced with raised margin detail that alternates in width. Steep pitched cope wallhead gablets sit above the doors. The windows also have raised margins and were originally fitted with 18-pane sash and case glazing. A polygonal Jacobethan-style ashlar end stack is located on the west side.

The stables block has a 5-bay east elevation, which includes a door with a 3-light narrow fanlight at the second bay from the left and a second door at the fourth bay beneath a gabletted opening. The ridge vent has been removed, and the roof is slated.
