Description

The Liberal Club, located at 32 High Street in Paisley, was designed by architect James Donald in 1886, with later additions. This building features a Renaissance style and consists of three and four storeys, with a semi-circular corner.

The exterior is constructed of ashlar stone, channelled up to the first floor, except for a narrow left bay. The ground floor has modern shops, but retains a round-headed doorpiece with a consoled cornice and a balustraded canopy. There is a cill course at the first floor, which includes four pedimented mullion and transom windows. Above the door is a pedimented sash window, and the left bay features a corniced transomed window. The second floor has a central narrow bay and four wide round-headed windows, flanked by paired or single engaged fluted Ionic columns and outer piers. The left side has a corniced sash window with strap work decoration. The building is topped with a dentilled eaves cornice and a die balustrade that continues around the return elevation.

The semi-circular corner features bipartite windows with mullions and transoms on the first floor, and pilastered tripartite windows on the second floor, with "Liberal Club" carved above. The third floor has architraved square windows and wooden brackets that support a conical slated roof. The return elevation to Church Hill includes one inner blind bay and two outer bays. There is a cornice over the blind bay with a dated cartouche on the second floor. The outer bays display a variety of corniced mullioned and transomed windows. To the left, there is a two-bay angled extension that is single storey, with an attic and stack, and features three flat-headed dormers. All roofs are covered with slate.
